The chinquapin is a native of the states through which the Mississippi river flows and eastward. Although not precisely settled, there appears to be several either species or sub-species of Chinquapins, three of these mentioned are the Allegheny chinquapin, that of Arkansas, and dwarf species identified in Georgia. The Chinquapin is well adapted to the sandy soils of south Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida as well as Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and the Atlantic coastal states. Offerred here are two types, one from Louisiana and Arkansas, and a second one from Ohio. The Chinquapin will grow to a height of 25 to 30 feet and produces a small colorful black nut with an orange top. About the size of and acorn, the chinquapin resembles the chestnut with a burr that opens in September or October to reveal a single waxcy black nut. The sweet flavor of the Chinquapin makes it a favored food for wild life so you will compete with squirrels at harvest time. The size of the Chinquapin tree makes it suitable for landscaping. The easily grown seedling will produce chinquapins in about 3 years. The male flower is produced in the spring on the new growth with the female flower having the appearance of chinquapin burr. The plant grows best in a well drained acid soil. A half gallon paper milk carton is a suitable container for starting the Chinquapin in a sunny window in early spring. Transplanting into a hole 18 to 24 inches deep with similar width can be accomplished by removing the bottom of the carton, placing it in the hole, filling with the planting soil then carefully sliding the roots with its planting soil out of the carton by pulling the carton up while pressing the soil inside the carton with the roots downward. The carton can be left partially in the soil and suitably braced to protect the seedling thus serving as a tree shelter.
